Welcome
In the times of old, the world was held together with magic and strange creatures roamed the land.
Magic was chosen but given to a handful each decade – a group by the name of the Almárëan. The cost of the gift was great – their humanity. Humanity, after all, was a gift from the Great Mother and pays the price in full for their great power. Those who received the gift lost all connection with their past lives: their memories disappeared, and they were regarded with both awe and suspicion. Gifted with longer lives, the Almárëan outlived all they loved.
The Almárëan were useful to the humans of old. War mages did the bidding of the king. Healers belong to each town and city, safeguarding the people of the land. Druids tended to the land, yielding exceptional harvest even in the harshest of climates. Although the Almárëan were powerful, their small number made it imperative to remain within as subjects of the kingdom of Escar. As the years progressed, the number of Almárëan dwindled – fewer were afflicted with the illness that granted magic. Around the same time, a mad king put thousands of Almárëan to death, fearful that those more powerful than he would rise up to take the throne of Escar. Those who lived disappeared north, past the Ierod Mountains, into the hostile and untamed land of Indir.
Near a thousand years has passed since the last Almárëan was known to walk this world.
The first case of the return of the Almárëan occurred fifty years ago, in Arana. A young girl contracted a mysterious illness and soon after died - on the eve of her burial, she awoke to have no recollection of her family and a destructive power that burnt down much of the lower quarter. Other stories soon followed from throughout the land. Fear spread through the smaller villages but these rumours did not reach the capital until a few years later. The royality, equipped with their fears of old, secretly rounded up those they could find that were afflicted, branded them, and banished them to the land of Indir.
For the last few years, the stories have been harder to contain.
