This cold was obnoxious. Gia longed for it to end. She would be getting married, or so her father announced, and when she met this desperately handsome young man she did not want to appear pale and ill. She had a feeling that this was a bad omen, though. Perhaps God did not want her to marry this person and so struck her down with a cold to keep the whole thing at bay. Generally conscientious about such things, Gia pushed that perspective as far away from her mind as possible. She did not like to think that God was opposed to this happiness, which seemed oddly strange to her. She was not used to being opposed to God’s will, if this was what God’s will was. Shaking her head, she continued through the gardens. This was the best place to walk and think. She felt so watched now in her own home, her parents making certain that she was ready. The only downside was her stutter and inability to face complicated situations but she figured she could be the best wife she could. She was tiny, which bode ill for the prospect of children, but that, too, she pushed from her mind. Gia wanted to be a mother and to nurture, which was in her nature to do. She did so with Caleb, her only friend.

She suddenly felt dizzy though, the clouds spinning together and she quickly sat down on a cool, stone bench. Blinking, she felt momentarily dazed and cold again. Wrapping her fingers together to keep them warm, she looked back up to the world and sighed. This was not a good sign. She found herself panicking, as she was wont to do, and it took several deep breaths to calm her down. This would not ruin her chances at marriage, of course it wouldn’t. She felt like she had been waiting forever for this opportunity even though she was only nineteen. She had been pampered and prepped for her role. Being the eldest daughter meant that her marriage was extremely important. She could not just marry anyone, of course. Her fingers fled to the rosary she kept in her pockets at all times. God would help her through this. He was always the one to help her through anything.
