Sonea rubbed her arm as she walked through the vast hallways of the castle. Maybe it hadn’t been such a great idea convincing her uncle to let her learn to fight after all. The guard he had selected to over sea her training seemed to have unending energy and seemed to expect her to be able to keep up as if she had been training in sword fighting for years. There were moments she wanted to complain but then that would most likely mean her uncle believing that he had always been right about it being too dangerous for a young woman of nobility to learn to fight. Maybe she should try and find Eleanor and ask for some tips? Sonea was certain Eleanor would be able to help in a less painful manner. Sure bruises healed quickly but was it necessary for her to come out of every training session sporting new bruises? Gregory claimed she was improving but sometimes she wondered if he was just saying that to be polite. Sonea couldn’t help but notice how some ladies of the court seemed to always giggle, whisper and point when they thought Sonea was out of hearing range. Surely if she was any good then she wouldn’t be the victim of their teasing and gossiping.
Sonea shook her head trying to clear her thoughts, these days her mind was constantly jumping from one thought to the next, never really staying focused for long periods of time. This stress of the war was starting to get to her, she somehow felt more confined than ever before. Most likely that was due to the fact that there was more people at court than what she was used to. All the houses of nobility had sent at least one member to represent them at the war room meetings, then there were all the ladies of nobility that had all appeared in the city. Sonea hated having to interact with them, she found most pretentious snobs who had initially attempted to befriend her most likely because of her being cousin of both princes. She wondered just how stupid did they think she was, especially since they had constantly been asking her not-so subtly placed questions about her cousins. Thankfully most had quickly realised she was not interested in playing match-maker for both her cousins, or interested in being matched with one of their brothers.
Sonea soon found herself in the Hall of Feasts, it had not been used in quite a while. The long table where feasts were usually held, stood empty. The kingdom had not had much to celebrate in the last year so the hall was empty with an eery silence filling it. Even though the room was not in use, it was still dusted on a regular basis so the long table was empty but gleaming. Sonea walked down the length of the table running her fingers across the wood mindlessly. Memories of the feasts she had attended in the past sprang to mind, memories of a happier time.
