DARIAN ALISTAIR
Name Darian Alistair
Age Thirty-one
Occupation Member of the King’s Guard
PERSONALITY
Darian was raised to be a warrior. He lived a hard life of daily training and rigorous drilling. As a result he has become a hard man, a man who holds his ability to protect others above all else. As a member of the King’s Guard he believes it is not only his responsibility to protect the King and the royal family, but also the people of the realm.
He is unerringly loyal, even to the point of going against his own wishes, especially where his work with the royal family is involved. Darian’s sense of duty is what holds him together and keeps him moving forward. He feels as though his work is good, and he fulfills his purpose in life. The old code of chivalry and moral fortitude lives on in him. However his moral compass might not always be pointing north.
In this world there is only black and white: what is good, and what is not. Everything and everyone falls somewhere in those two regions. Darian was always taught that either something is right and just and will help the people and the kingdom, or it is not. And anything that isn’t for the good of the kingdom is something that must be eradicated. Something like the plague and those infected. To him anyone who carries the plague is a threat to not only themselves, but to everyone around them. Were he to have his way, the carriers would be rounded up and disposed of. Magic is a dangerous thing, and he sees no place for it in the world anymore.
He is a very stubborn man and is not likely to change his mind once it is set. Given a cause to champion, or a task to do he will follow wherever that path leads with an unflinchingly single-minded devotion. There are few who have the power to stop him when he sets his mind to something.
His desire to protect the kingdom has led him to be an ambitious man; he dreams of one day being the Captain of the King’s Guard. With that much power he could truly turn the world back into a place of prosperity and peace. It would be the highest honour he could ever hope to achieve in his lifetime.
HISTORY
For as far back as anyone can trace the Alistairs have been a militarily minded family. The men have all served in the armies of the kingdom and many of them have fought in great battles and won glory for the family name. As a boy Darian was told the awe inspiring stories of his forbearers and dreamed of the day when he might live up to his name.
His father served in the King’s Guard and trained with Darian every chance he had. Darian’s father dreamed of his son becoming a great and honourable knight. And so the boy grew up quickly, learning how to wield a blade and fire a bow - how to take a hit, and how to incapacitate an enemy. He was also schooled on the moral obligations of a good man – he was taught that he should always stand up for those who could not stand up for themselves, and that it was his duty to protect the innocent and the lives of the common people.
As a result of his training he had very little time left for friends or fun. However, there was one boy who his father also trained – a friend of the family whose father had been slain on the battlefield. The two young boys shared everything – every cut and scrape, every bruise and broken bone. They grew to be the best of friends and shared in the dream of one day serving the realm.
Eventually they were old enough to really start pursuing their dream. They started as low ranking members of the army (as any men would) but they quickly rose through the ranks together thanks to all the hours they spent training. One day Darian’s dream came true as he was elevated to a place among the King’s Guard. The two young men swore that it would not be long until the other boy would be by Darian’s side again.
It was never meant to be.
One afternoon Darian overheard that his friend hadn’t shown up to his post that morning. Darian took the first chance he could to slip away and investigate the matter, knowing that something must be seriously wrong for his friend to shirk his duty. As he approached his friend’s family home the air was filled with thick black smoke and people ran back and forth in a panic – the small house was on fire.
Darian sprung into action to help smother the blaze, but it was too late – the house was razed to the ground. They found no sign of Darian’s friend or his sister who still lived with him. There were whispers that the cause of the inferno had been something otherworldly – the plague.
To this day he has neither heard nor seen his friend and has given up hope. Clearly the young man died in the blaze. This incident only further deepened Darian’s desire to wipe out the plague by any means necessary – a plight he means to petition in front of the King as soon as he is able.
